Running is a great way to stay active, but it can often feel lonely when you’re running alone every week. If your friends aren’t into running, it can be difficult to find a running partner. That’s where running clubs come in!

Some people may feel intimidated by the idea of joining a running club. You may have concerns like, “What if everyone is faster than me?” or “What if they run longer distances than me?” or “I’d love to join, but I’m nervous to go alone.” These may seem like valid reasons to skip the club, but you might just be making excuses.

As someone who has set up two running clubs, I can assure you that they are welcoming and supportive communities. Plus, there are many benefits to running with a group.

Motivation

After a tiring day at work, it can be tempting to skip your evening run. However, committing to a regular running routine with others can help you stay motivated, especially during bad weather. It’s easier to get out there when you have someone to run with, especially when it’s dark outside. Running with a partner or a group can be a great way to stay safe and make the most of your workouts. See here for more tips on staying safe in the dark.

Vary your pace

Running clubs welcome runners of all levels of ability. Whether you’re feeling competitive and want to keep up with the faster runners or prefer a slower pace at the back, there’s something for everyone. Some clubs even offer coaching sessions, as well as track and speed work nights, which can be very helpful for improving your skills.

Knowledge

You will not only discover new routes but also gather plenty of helpful local information such as the best places to go for a sports massage or a post-run coffee.

Make new friends

It can be challenging to meet new people when balancing the demands of work and family life, especially if you are new to an area. Running clubs can be a fantastic way to connect with like-minded individuals who share a common interest and potentially make new friends. I have personally met some of my closest friends through running clubs.

Events and Races

Running clubs often participate in local races, charity runs, and community events as a team. These events provide opportunities to challenge yourself, celebrate achievements, and contribute to worthy causes alongside your clubmates.

Discounts and Perks

By joining a club, you may enjoy access to special offers and perks such as discounts on gear, race registrations (if England Athletic Affiliated), and other fitness-related services to their members.

Are you interested in joining a running club? For a yearly membership fee of around £20-£30, you can get a shiny new club vest and the experience of being part of a team. This is less than what you may usually pay for a gym membership in a month! Additionally, most clubs offer a few free sessions for you to try out before committing to a membership.
