The Snake Lane 10 is a must-do race for runners in East Yorkshire, offering an ideal 10-mile distance for spring marathon training. Hosted annually by Pocklington Runners, it draws about 1,100 participants each year. Race registration opens in October and sells out quickly due to its great timing for spring race prep. This is the perfect opportunity for anyone preparing for larger events like the Manchester or London Marathon.
Pre-Race Preparations and Atmosphere
On race day, runners gather at Pocklington Rugby Club, which is conveniently located just five minutes from the start line. The venue is a hub of excitement, with participants warming up and making their final race preparations. A pre-race coffee is a tradition for many, offering a moment to relax and take in the lively atmosphere before the start.
The Scenic Snake Lane 10 Course
The Snake Lane 10 race is known for its winding course through the scenic East Yorkshire countryside, near the Yorkshire Wolds. This picturesque route takes runners through charming villages like Meltonby, Bishop Wilton, and Bolton (not the one near Manchester!). The race starts and ends in Pocklington, with the finish line in the town’s historic market square. The support from the crowd at the finish is always a highlight, creating a fantastic atmosphere for runners of all levels.
Race Day Experiences
This year’s race featured pacers aiming for finish times of 65, 70, 80, 85, and 90 minutes, providing excellent support for runners targeting specific goals. Although the first mile involved weaving through the crowd, the wide-open roads allowed runners to find their rhythm quickly. While headphones are prohibited, this creates a more interactive and engaging race experience, encouraging conversations and camaraderie among participants.
The Outcome
The race proved once again why it’s one of the region’s most beloved events. The well-organised structure and friendly atmosphere make it a highlight on the spring racing calendar. With a personal best time of 1:27:35, I was thrilled to cross the finish line. A medal, chocolate bar, and goody bag awaited at the finish.
