Yorkshire Marathon

I’ve run the Yorkshire Marathon Multiple Times: Here’s What to Expect

York turned pink last weekend as the Yorkshire Marathon and ten-mile road race returned to the city for its sixth year. This event will always be special to me as it’s in my hometown and it was the first marathon I ever did. However, this year, I wasn’t running—I was spectating!

Race Route Overview

The race starts at the University and heads into York before winding through Upper Helmsley, Stamford Bridge, Gate Helmsley, Murton, and Osbaldwick, finishing back at the university. Despite the wet conditions, brave runners battled the elements to cross the finish line. I was there for about two hours, cheering and hi-fiving passing strangers, and I was absolutely drenched—so I can only imagine how those taking part were feeling!

Yorkshire Marathon – Best Spectator Spots

York Minster (Mile 2-3)

If you want to catch your loved ones in the city centre, be sure to get there early, as this is around 2-3 miles into the race. It’s a great place to see both the marathon and the ten-mile runners.

Stamford Bridge (Mile 14)

This is one of the turning points of the marathon, and there’s usually music here to keep the spirits high!

Dunnington (Mile 17)

This is the official spectator point. It’s not central, and due to road closures, you’ll need to walk a fair way to get there. At this point, people tend to be more spread out, making it easier to recognise your loved ones. Plus, as it’s an out-and-back section, you’ll get to see them pass twice.

A Huge Thank You!

A huge well done to anyone who took part, and hats off to all the volunteers—they deserve a medal too for standing there on such a miserable day!

Looking Ahead

I’m all signed up to take part next year. Is anyone joining me? For more information click here
