Ledlenser® NEO4 Head Torch

As the clocks go back and the nights draw in, it’s time to prepare for those evening runs. Running in the dark can be challenging, but with the right gear, it can also be enjoyable and safe. One essential item every runner should consider is a good head torch. In this post, I’ll share my experience with the Ledlenser® NEO4 Head Torch and offer some insights into choosing the best head torch for your needs.

Why You Need a Head Torch for Night Running

Running after dark requires extra caution and visibility. A head torch not only illuminates your path but also keeps your hands free for better balance and control. Here are some key benefits of using a head torch:

  1. Enhanced Visibility: Head torches provide light directly where you’re looking, ensuring you can see obstacles in your path.
  2. Hands-Free Convenience: Unlike handheld torches, head torches allow you to use your hands for other tasks, like adjusting your clothing or using your phone.
  3. Improved Safety: A head torch helps you remain visible to others, whether you’re running in a residential area or on dark trails.

Unboxing the Ledlenser® NEO4 Head Torch

When I received the Ledlenser® NEO4 Head Torch in my goodie bag from the Running Awards, I was excited to try it out.

Design and Comfort

Out of the box, the torch has a vibrant pink design that I absolutely love (it’s also available in other colours for those who prefer something more neutral). At first glance, it appears lightweight, but the battery pack does add some bulk to the back, which can be a bit cumbersome during longer runs. I also noticed a power cable connecting the light to the battery pack, which isn’t my favourite feature, as it could be a potential snag hazard while running.

Battery and Setup

The Ledlenser® NEO4 requires 3 AAA batteries. The battery pack is accessed by removing a rubber cover, which is simple enough. However, I made the classic mistake of switching it on immediately after inserting the batteries and almost blinded myself—definitely a lesson learned!

Light Performance

With an impressive output of 240 lumens and a beam distance of 10 metres, this head torch offers substantial illumination for evening runs. It features three light modes: low, flashing, and bright. During my runs, I primarily used the brightest setting, which was more than adequate for navigating my mostly residential and street-lit routes.

One feature I wish I had utilised sooner is the ability to tilt the torch to adjust the light direction. This can be particularly useful when navigating uneven terrain or running uphill.

Pros and Cons of the Ledlenser® NEO4

Pros:

  • Bright Illumination: The 240 lumens provide excellent visibility, making it easier to see and be seen.
  • Lightweight Design: Despite the battery pack, the torch remains relatively comfortable to wear.
  • Multiple Light Settings: The ability to switch between different brightness levels is beneficial for varying conditions.

Cons:

  • Bulky Battery Pack: The size of the battery pack can be uncomfortable for longer runs.
  • Exposed Wires: The power cable running from the light to the battery can be a snag hazard.
  • Weather Concerns: The rubber seal on the battery compartment could be a concern during rainy runs, as it tends to come off easily.

Final Thoughts: Is the Ledlenser® NEO4 Right for You?

Overall, I would rate the Ledlenser® NEO4 Head Torch 3 out of 5 stars. While I appreciate its brightness and vibrant design, the battery pack and exposed wires detract from its usability. If you’re considering other options, I found the Unilite head torch to be a more practical choice for my needs.

Tips for Choosing the Right Head Torch

When searching for a head torch that suits your running style, consider the following factors:

  1. Brightness: Look for a torch with at least 200 lumens for adequate illumination.
  2. Comfort and Fit: Ensure it has an adjustable strap and isn’t too bulky for your head.
  3. Battery Life: Choose a torch with long battery life or rechargeable options to avoid constant replacements.
  4. Weather Resistance: If you run in wet conditions, look for a waterproof or water-resistant model.

Running in the dark doesn’t have to be a daunting experience. With the right head torch, you can enjoy your evening runs while staying safe and visible. If you’re looking for more tips on running at night, check out my previous blog post for additional insights.
