If you are new to running, it can feel like you need to buy all the gear before you even take your first step. Social media does not help with this. Suddenly it looks like everyone has expensive trainers, matching outfits, watches, headphones, belts, bottles and more.
Let me save you some stress. Beginner runners really do not need much at all. Comfort matters far more than having the latest kit.
Running shoes, get fitted if you can
The one thing worth getting right is your running shoes.
If possible, visit a specialist running shop and get fitted. They will look at how you run, your gait, and recommend something suitable. This does not mean you need the most expensive pair in the shop, just the right pair for you.
Well fitting shoes can help reduce injury risk and make running feel more comfortable from the start. If your shoes hurt, rub, or feel unstable, running will always feel harder than it needs to be.

ASICS
Why runners love the ASICS NOVABLAST™ 5
Lightweight, cushioned and designed for comfort, the ASICS NOVABLAST™ 5 is a popular choice for road runners. The breathable mesh upper helps keep your feet cool, while soft FF BLAST™ MAX cushioning absorbs impact and makes each run feel smoother. A great everyday trainer if you want comfort and support without anything too bulky.

One decent pair of leggings or shorts
You do not need a wardrobe full of running clothes. One comfortable pair of leggings or shorts is enough to get started.
Look for:
- Fabric that does not rub
- A fit that stays put when you move
- Something you feel comfortable wearing
Confidence often comes from feeling secure and supported, not from how something looks on Instagram.

A supportive sports bra
If you wear a sports bra, this is another non negotiable.
A good sports bra should feel supportive without being restrictive. It can make a huge difference to comfort, especially when you are new to running and still finding your rhythm.
Again, this does not need to be expensive, it just needs to fit properly.

GOODMOVE
Ultimate Support Contoured Sports Bra
The Goodmove sports bra delivers maximum hold for tough workouts, with contoured shaping, underwiring, and moisture-wicking fabric to keep you cool and dry. Non-padded for a natural fit, it’s designed for bounce control and all-day comfort—tested to ensure you stay supported no matter how hard you move.
That’s basically it
Honestly, that is all you need to start running.
You do not need a running watch or fancy socks. You do not need matching outfits or specialist accessories. Those things can come later if you want them, but they are not essential.
If you already own clothes you can move comfortably in, use them. The best kit is the kit you already have.
Comfort builds confidence
One thing I see time and time again is beginners thinking they need better gear to feel confident. In reality, confidence usually comes from feeling comfortable.
Once running feels easier and more familiar, you might choose to invest in extra kit. That is when reviews and recommendations can be helpful. I have shared honest kit reviews on the blog if you enjoy that sort of thing, but none of it is required to get started.
Start simple. Let running fit into your life, not the other way around.
