Trails and Vines: The Ultimate Running and Wine Weekend

Imagine a trail run through the stunning Norfolk countryside, finishing at a vineyard with a glass of wine in hand. Sounds like the dream, right? Well, this dream becomes a reality with Trails and Vines!

Founded by Chris and Abby, two passionate runners and wine lovers, Trails and Vines combines the best of both worlds. Their weekend getaways are all about running local trails, enjoying top-notch accommodation, exploring vineyards, and indulging in delicious food and wine.

I recently joined one of their 3-day Norfolk retreats. Although this was a press trip, the experience mirrors what any guest would enjoy. Here’s what a typical Trails and Vines weekend looks like, and why it’s perfect for both solo travellers and groups.

Day One: Arrival and First Run

Our weekend started at Norwich station, where Chris collected us and drove us to Stubbs House, our home for the next three days. The house is beautiful, with character-filled rooms, comfy communal spaces, and plenty of charm. On arrival, we were welcomed with refreshments and the most incredible lemon drizzle cake – the perfect pick-me-up after travel.

Once everyone had introduced themselves, it was time to lace up for our first run – about 4 miles through the rolling Norfolk countryside. The trails were a mix of soft forest paths, open fields, and winding riverside tracks, making every step scenic. Even if you’re not an experienced trail runner, the pace and routes are tailored to suit everyone.

Our run ended at Chet Vineyard, where Abby led a calming yoga session in the tasting room. After stretching out, we were treated to a glass of sparkling wine on the terrace, overlooking the lush vineyards. It was the perfect combination of effort and reward.

Back at Stubbs House, we relaxed in the hot tub before enjoying dinner. Abby’s meals are more than just tasty – they’re nutritious, seasonal, and designed to fuel runners for the weekend ahead.

Day Two: Training and Wine Tasting

After a peaceful night’s sleep, we were greeted with one of Abby’s signature breakfasts – homemade granola, creamy yogurt, and warming porridge. Feeling fuelled, we started the day with a strength session in the garden, followed by a short run to the river for some speed work.

Both Chris and Abby are experienced coaches, so every session is tailored to your ability. You don’t need to worry about keeping up or holding anyone back. I especially loved the interval session: 3 minutes out, rest, 2.5 minutes back, with shorter intervals in between. It was challenging but really rewarding, and a session I’ll definitely repeat on my own runs.

The afternoon was all about wine. We visited Winbirri Vineyard, one of England’s most exciting new wine producers. Their still and sparkling wines have won multiple awards, and the tour was both informative and fun. We sampled five wines over a three-hour session, learning about the production process and tasting techniques. My favourite? The award-winning Bacchus, which I happily took home.

After returning to Stubbs House, we enjoyed another delicious home-cooked meal and relaxed with some more wine. By this point, I was half-joking about convincing Abby to move north and become my personal chef!

Day Three: Long Run and Farewell

The final day offered a choice of long-run distances – 12km or 17km – through South Norfolk’s glorious trails. The routes meandered through dense woodland, open farmland, and alongside gentle streams, making every kilometre a joy. Everyone ran at their own pace, regrouping at intervals so no one felt left behind.

Post-run, we returned to Stubbs House for restorative yoga and a hearty lunch. By the time Chris dropped us back at Norwich station, I felt exhilarated, nourished, and already planning my next trip.
