My Race Day Kit List (with links to everything I use)

The ultimate guide for girls getting into running – with cute, comfy and confidence-boosting essentials!

So, you’ve signed up for your first race – yay you! Whether it’s a 5K, 10K or something a little longer, one of the biggest questions the girls have is: what on earth do I wear?!
Been there. Trust me. And after running a lot of races (and making a lot of kit mistakes), I’ve nailed down my race day essentials – comfy, practical, and most importantly, they look good too.

Here’s everything I use on race day, with links so you can shop your faves. There are also a few discount codes in here (because who doesn’t love a deal?). Let’s do this 🏃‍♀️✨

My Running Kit (That won’t let you down)

ASICS Gel-Kayano or Novablast Trainers

When it comes to running shoes, it’s personal and what works for your mate might not work for you. But for me, the ASICS Gel-Kayano is my go-to for long runs and races. They’re supportive, stable and feel like a dream in the final miles.
If I’m doing a shorter race (like a 5k or 10k), I swap to the ASICS Novablast – they’re lighter and super bouncy, perfect for picking up the pace.

Top Tip: Pop into a local running shop and get fitted properly. It’ll save your feet (and help avoid any niggles!).

sweaty betty zero gravity shorts

Sweaty Betty Zero Gravity Shorts

I tried these shorts recently and they are a game-changer. Honestly, the Sweaty Betty Zero Gravity shorts are cute, comfy and they come with proper pockets – like, actual space for gels, keys and even your phone. They don’t budge while running either – no awkward tugging or riding up.

A Lightweight Running Top

You can’t go wrong with a sweat-wicking tank or tee. Something breathable, soft, and ideally, something you’ve worn on a few training runs. Never wear brand-new kit on race day – chafing is not the vibe.

Tech I Love

Garmin Forerunner 255

The Garmin 255 is my trusty running sidekick. It tracks everything from your pace and distance to heart rate and splits. It’s easy to use, has amazing battery life, and helps me stay on track during races without checking my phone every five seconds.

Check out the Garmin deal on Amazon.

Shokz OpenRun Bone Conduction Headphones (in PINK 💕)

Want to listen to your music and hear what’s going on around you? These are a must. The Shokz OpenFit headphones sit just outside your ears, so you can still hear announcements, traffic and cheering crowds – and they’re England Athletics race-approved.
Oh, and they come in pink. Which obviously makes them faster, right?

The OpenFit in pink 😍 are available here on Amazon

Race Freshness

Fussy Natural Deodorant

Eco-friendly, refillable Fussy deodorant works a treat! It’s free from aluminium and kind to sensitive skin. I love how fresh it smells (even after 10 sweaty miles!) trust me, I’ve tried it.

Check out the new All At Sea Scent – not to be dramatic but I’d buy it for the case alone! But then she hits with sea salt, bergamot and sandalwood – fresh, clean, expensive!

Body Glide Chafe Balm

If you only take one tip from this blog, let it be this: Body Glide is your skin’s best friend. Pop it on thighs, underarms, bra straps – anywhere you might chafe. Especially useful in summer or when it’s humid out.

SPF

Trust me, even on cloudy days you’ll want protection! I use La Roche-Posay Anthelios SPF 50+ – it’s super lightweight, doesn’t clog pores, and stays put even when you’re working up a serious sweat.

Fuel & Recovery

Race Day Gels

I’ve tried them all. My top picks? Maurten (super minimal) and SIS gels (easier to find in the UK). I usually have one every 30-40 minutes on long runs, but everyone is individual – find what works for you in training first! For shorter runs Percy Pigs or Jelly Babies work just fine.

free soul protein

Free Soul Vegan Protein Powder

You’ve done the race – now it’s time to recover like a queen. I love the Free Soul Vegan Protein shakes – they’re smooth, plant-based, and help me feel a little less sore the next day. I keep a shaker in my race bag so I can refuel straight after I finish. Chocolate flavour is 💯.

Don’t Forget These!

Here’s what else I pack in my race bag:

  • Spare socks (dry feet = happy feet)
  • Change of top (for post-run coffee, obvs)
  • Tissues (toilets never have enough!)
  • Baby wipes (a sweaty girl’s best friend)
  • A banana or oat bar (pre-run snack)
  • Lip balm & SPF (you’ll thank me later)
