York 10K

York 10K 2017

Call me biased, but the York 10K is one of my all-time favourite races. Having first run it back in 2013, I’ve fallen in love with its fantastic route through this historic city. From York Minster to the River Ouse, the views are unbeatable, and the organisation is top-notch. Though a bit pricey for a 10K, especially since I live locally and can run the route for free, I’ll always take part if I can!

Before the Race

The event village was buzzing with excitement, filled with around 6,000 runners. It was great meeting Fitmums from different clubs and connecting with a few friends from Instagram. The pre-race atmosphere was lively, with a mass warm-up (which I skipped). Having already logged 42 miles that week, I wasn’t aiming for a personal best—just out to enjoy the day.

The York 10K Route

The race kicks off at York Racecourse, leading runners into the city via Bishopthorpe Road. The scenic route takes you under the city walls, through Micklegate Bar, and along Coney Street, where you’ll resist the temptation of high street shops (if only LUSH were open!). My favourite part is passing York Minster with its bells ringing, creating an unforgettable running experience. From there, you run through Goodramgate, Parliament Street, and past Clifford’s Tower before winding along the river, crossing the Millennium Bridge, and returning to the racecourse.

Top tip: Don’t sprint too early when you return to York Racecourse—there are two out-and-back sections before you hit the finish line!

During the Race

The course offers two water stations and plenty of crowd support, especially at key points like Bishy Road, Parliament Street, and around York Minster. While relatively flat, the course can feel a bit crowded in certain sections. Special thanks to the York Pipe Band for their motivational tunes along the route!

Looking Ahead

I’m already looking forward to being back in York for the 10-mile race in October. If you’re up for a challenge but not quite ready for a half marathon, I highly recommend this race. Trust me—I’m not on commission… although maybe I should be!
