How would you spend the hottest Saturday of the year so far? Firing up the BBQ and sipping a cold beer in the garden, or racing a steam train through the North York Moors? I like a challenge – so after covering myself in factor 50, off I went to Chase the Train!
Chase the train: Event overview
The race kicked off from Grosmont at 14:00, following a scenic rail trail to Goathland. Friends and family cheered from the train, which added a really fun and unique atmosphere. It was a brilliant summer challenge, and the supportive community made it even more enjoyable.

Route Description
We set off from Grosmont along the rail trail to Goathland, then returned along public footpaths on the edge of the moors, rejoining the rail trail near Crag Dike back to Grosmont. Family and friends got off the train at Goathland to cheer us on before catching it back 50 minutes later.
The rail trail itself was lovely and fairly flat with some shady spots. The hills came later in the course. Running in the hottest part of the day meant I took it steady, stopping for photos – this view was too good to rush!
It was mixed terrain. I wore road shoes because my trail shoes were in the wash (lesson learned: never put trainers in the washing machine!), and they were fine, but next time I’ll be in proper trail shoes.
Preparing to Chase the train
If you’re considering participating in a similar trail running event, here are some tips to help you prepare:
- Choose the Right Footwear: Trail shoes are ideal for uneven terrains. Ensure your shoes are suitable for the conditions. If you find yourself with road shoes, be cautious on trails, especially if they are due for replacement.
- Stay Hydrated: With temperatures soaring, hydration is crucial. Carry water or plan your route around water stations. This event featured two water stops, one at 3 miles and another at 6.5 miles.
- Embrace the Experience: While competition can be motivating, remember to enjoy the journey. Focus on the scenery rather than simply beating the train or other runners.
Participating in events like this is an exhilarating way to push yourself while soaking in stunning surroundings. Very few runners can say they’ve raced a steam train through the North York Moors – it really is one-of-a-kind!
Thanks to the Team
Huge thanks to all the marshals and volunteers, and to Mark and Martin at Racebest for organising the event. These guys are super speedy at replying to emails and made the day run smoothly.
