I’ve seen so much online about reformer Pilates lately. I keep seeing comments like, “I’d love to try it, but I don’t think I’d fit in,” or “I don’t look like the girls on the studio’s Instagram,” or even “I don’t want to go alone.” Sound familiar? Trust me, you’re not the only one who feels that way. As women, we already face plenty of barriers when it comes to exercise, so why add extra ones ourselves?
As a size 10/12 woman (apparently the internet calls us “mid-size”… how rude, right?) in my 40s, I completely get it. The Pilates world, especially on social media, can feel intimidating if you don’t see women like yourself reflected back. But here’s the thing, Pilates has been one of the best things I’ve added to my routine. I swear by it for keeping me mobile and helping to prevent running injuries. Quite honestly, it’s been incredible for my body as I get older.
I signed myself up for a bunch of reformer classes and went solo. Believe me, I don’t look like the girls on the studio’s Instagram pages either and guess what, no one cared!
Finding a Studio That Gets It
The key is finding a Pilates studio that values all bodies and creates a warm, welcoming space where size, age, or experience doesn’t matter. You’re there to move, strengthen, and feel good in your skin. Pilates is about how you feel, not how you look. Yes, we all have rolls when we bend, and yes, the mirrors show them from every angle, but you know what? That’s perfectly okay.
Going Alone? No Problem.
I’ll hold my hands up, I’m a total solo queen and going alone doesn’t faze me. But I know it can feel daunting if you’re not used to it. The great thing is, going solo means you get to focus completely on yourself, your body, and you r breath without distractions. Pilates studios are surprisingly social and friendly places. I’ve even made some lovely connections just by showing up regularly.
My advice if you’re thinking of trying Pilates
- Start with a beginner or intro class to build confidence and get to grips with the reformer machine.
- Ignore the Instagram-perfect bodies. Pilates is for you, exactly as you are.
- Sit at the front if you can it might feel scary, but everyone else is behind you, so you can focus on yourself without comparing yourself to others.
- Arrive a little early to meet the instructor, get familiar with the studio, and settle in.
- You don’t need a matching set – a pair of leggings and a t-shirt will work just fine. As long as it’s comfortable and lets you move freely.
- Don’t be afraid to ask questions – instructors are there to help you.
- Going solo? No problem. The community is welcoming, and you’ll soon feel part of it.
- Give yourself grace if you don’t get every move straight away, and remember, consistency beats intensity – even a couple of classes a week can make a big difference.
- Seek out studios that celebrate inclusivity. It makes all the difference.
If you’re on the fence about reformer Pilates because you don’t think you fit the mould, take it from me, you absolutely do. Your body deserves movement that makes you feel strong, mobile, and confident, and Pilates can be that for you.
If you want to check out the studios I love, here are the links to Ossie, Elethea, and Saige Pilates – they all make everyone feel right at home.
Go on, give it a try. You might just surprise yourself.
