Liverpool Rock and Roll

Liverpool Rock and Roll

The Rock ‘n’ Roll Liverpool Half Marathon is one of my favorite races, and it’s easy to see why. As a runner, music lover, and fan of Liverpool, this race feels tailor-made for me. Your race number even comes with a beer ticket—what more could you want? This year, I participated for the fourth time, and the excitement never fades.

A Weekend Full of Fun: The Rock ‘n’ Roll Series

The Rock ‘n’ Roll series transforms the city into a weekend of music and running. With a variety of races, including a 5k on Saturday, a half and full marathon on Sunday, and a fun mile run in the afternoon, there’s something for everyone. Local bands provide entertainment along the course, culminating in a lively finish line festival.

Race Day: Here comes the sun

I kept a close eye on the weather forecast leading up to the event. Due to a previous injury and the soaring 23-degree heat, I opted to drop down to the half marathon the day before the race—a smart choice for my health. It’s important to be sensible and listen to your body.

Expo Experience: Swapping Race Entries

The expo was my first stop, where I swapped my race entries. To be honest, I remembered it to be much bigger than it was this year. While there were fewer shopping opportunities than I’d hoped, I still felt tempted by the variety of races on offer. The organization of the main event on Sunday was impressive, with participants setting off in waves for both races.

The Course: Sights and Sounds of Liverpool

The route showcases many of Liverpool’s iconic sights, including the Cavern Club, Chinatown, Penny Lane, Sefton Park, and the Liver Building. Football fans will enjoy the marathon’s course as it passes by both Liverpool and Everton grounds, with this year’s route even taking us through Anfield. The last 4-mile stretch along the Albert Docks is a true test of mental strength, especially with those cobbles underfoot!

Enjoying the Race: It’s About the Experience

My goal was to enjoy the atmosphere rather than race for time. I’ve already achieved my target of a sub-2 half marathon, so this time was more about soaking in the vibes. I started two corrals behind the 2-hour pacer and caught up with him by mile 3, but I let him go on the first hill. Thanks to the course gels provided, I managed to keep going, even though I prefer a different brand for consistency.

Crossing the Finish Line: A Sense of Accomplishment

I crossed the finish line in 2:03:56, and considering my hip issues and reduced training over the last six weeks, I felt great about my time. The energy of the crowd and the race atmosphere kept me going.

Post-Race Festivities: Music and More

One of the highlights of the race is the music festival that kicks off after the half marathon. Personally, I prefer the half over the full marathon because you get to enjoy the music festivities right after finishing. This year’s headliner was Space, and though I enjoyed their performance, I only lasted through two songs before heading back to cheer on my marathon-running friends.

The Bling: Medals Galore

Isn’t the medal fabulous? This year’s medal even spins! The encore medal is awarded to those who ran the race the previous year. If you also completed the 5k on Saturday and either the half or full marathon on Sunday, you earn a Remix medal. Participate in all events, and you can walk away with five medals!

Final Thoughts: Liverpool, You Rocked!

Once again, Liverpool has impressed me with its vibrant running community and engaging race experience. As I like to say, let’s throw in another Beatles song—I can’t wait to be back next year!
