Cheering Women in Sport: Inspiration from the Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025

I’ll be honest, I’ve never really watched rugby. It’s never been my thing. But this year, something amazing happened. I volunteered to be a flag bearer for two of the Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025 games. Both games were in York, and I had no other plans that weekend do figured, why not! As a volunteer, I received a match ticket and spent the day chatting with other volunteers and soaking up the atmosphere in the stadium.

I ended up completely hooked and following the rest of the tournament.

Easily Sucked Into Sporting Tournaments

I have a confession: I get obsessed with sporting tournaments. Earlier this year, I tuned into the Snooker Championship in Sheffield, mainly to see if Ronnie would play. Before I knew it, I was watching every game, analysing every shot and completely engrossed in it all. The same thing happened with Wimbledon – I went in to catch a few matches and ended up glued to the whole tournament.

It turns out, I’m easily swept up by passion, energy and skill on display in sport. The Women’s Rugby World Cup was no exception. It reminded me that inspiration can come from unexpected places, even sports I never thought I’d enjoy.

Why Women’s Rugby is Inspiring

The Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025 has been a massive moment for women’s sport. England’s Red Roses defeated Canada 33–13 at Twickenham in front of a record-breaking 81,885 fans.

Watching these women made me reflect on the importance of championing women in sport. Their focus, determination and skill are incredible. It wasn’t just about winning a trophy – it was about hard work, resilience and showing up for yourself and your team, while genuinely enjoying every moment on the field.

Lessons for Runners and Solo Athletes

It reminded me that inspiration can come from unexpected places. Even as a runner, watching a team sport gave me loads of ideas for my own training and mindset. There are lessons in:

  • Teamwork: Even in solo sports like running, having a support network, training buddies, or a cheering squad at a race makes a huge difference.
  • Dedication: The focus and discipline of these athletes is something we can all apply to our own fitness journeys. These are women who don’t give up! They show up, even on the days they don’t feel like it!
  • Mental toughness: Facing challenges head-on, staying calm under pressure, and pushing through tough moments – these are things we can borrow from team sports for our own races.

Volunteering Opened Doors I Didn’t Expect

I went into volunteering thinking I’d just be there for the day. I didn’t expect to discover a whole new appreciation for rugby.

Stepping out of your comfort zone opens doors to unexpected inspiration. Whether it’s volunteering at a sports event, joining a new club, or trying a hobby you’ve never considered, you might discover a passion you didn’t know existed.

For me, rugby reminded me how energising it is to be part of a community. Just like cheering at marathons or joining a running club, volunteering allowed me to meet people who share the same excitement and love for sport.

Inspiration Comes From Everywhere

Watching these events gives me energy and motivation that I can bring back to my own life and training. It’s a reminder that inspiration doesn’t have to come from what you already love. It can surprise you, pull you in, and leave a lasting impact.

Ultimately, my big takeaway is this: supporting and celebrating women in sport is empowering. Seeing women perform at their best, surrounded by a supportive community, reminded me why I love being part of sport.

Taking Inspiration Into Your Own Life

The Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025 showed me that passion is contagious. From never watching a game to following the tournament with excitement, I’ve discovered a new appreciation for rugby and for all women athletes who dedicate themselves to their sport.

The lesson? Step out, try new things, and celebrate achievements, both yours and others’. Whether it’s joining a sports club, volunteering at an event, or cheering loudly for women in sport, inspiration is everywhere. You might discover a whole new passion you didn’t expect.

So here’s to the Red Roses, the fans, the volunteers, and everyone who makes women’s sport so exciting. Thank you for inspiring me, and for inspiring so many others to get out there and try new things.
