Have you been thinking about joining your first parkrun but put it off because you feel nervous? You’re not alone! Lots of beginners feel those butterflies before their first run, which is why I’ve put together a few tips to help ease any nerves. The best part? Parkrun really is for everyone, no matter your fitness level.

What is Parkrun?

Parkrun started in 2004 in Bushy Park, London, when a small group of friends decided to time themselves over a 5km course. Fast forward to now, and it’s become a running phenomenon with events all over the UK and beyond. Parkruns happen every Saturday at 9 a.m., and are celebrations of fitness, friendship and just showing up for yourself. You can find your nearest event on the parkrun website.

Why You’ll Love Parkrun

Parkrun is such a great way to start your weekend. You’ll be surrounded by likeminded people, the atmosphere is always friendly and supportive, and you might even make a few new friends. Tips for Your First Parkrun

Here’s how to make sure your first parkrun is fun, relaxed, and stress-free:

  • Register in advance Sign up for free on the official parkrun website to get your personal barcode. Don’t worry – you only need to do this once.
  • Arrive early Getting there a bit early helps you find parking and check out the course. It’s also a great chance to meet other first-timers.
  • Dress comfortably Wear clothes and shoes that feel good and match the weather. No need for fancy gear – comfort is key.
  • Go at your own pace Parkrun isn’t a race. Focus on your own time and enjoy the experience. The tailwalker ensures no one finishes last.
  • Attend the first-timers’ briefing for a quick overview of the course. Follow course markers and volunteers – they’re there to help you have a great run.
  • Connect with the community Say hi to other runners if you like – most people are friendly, supportive and happy to chat.
  • Celebrate your finish Crossing the line, whether it’s your first or hundredth run, is a win. Have your barcode scanned to get your results emailed to you.
  • Keep coming back The first parkrun can feel daunting, but each week gets easier. Soon, it might become your favourite weekend ritual!
