For what must be the 11th or 12th time (I’ve lost count), it’s a no from me – applying for the London Marathon ballot has become a yearly tradition.
But while London gets all the hype, it’s not the only marathon worth running. The UK is full of brilliant road marathons that offer everything from fast and flat PB potential to scenic routes with big crowd energy. So, if you didn’t get a ballot place or just fancy mixing things up, here’s a round-up of the best UK road marathons not in London. Trust me, you won’t miss the crowds or the ballot stress.
Chester Marathon
Where? Chester
When? 5 October 2025
A bit of a hidden gem, this one’s got Roman walls, beautiful countryside, and top-notch organisation. It’s mostly flat with a few gentle inclines and just the right level of crowd buzz. Read my review here.
Abingdon Marathon
Where? Abingdon
When? 19 October 2025
Flat, fast and ideal if you’ve got a time goal in mind. It’s a smaller race, so expect fewer crowds but zero faff. A great one to tick off if you’re chasing a PB or working towards a qualifying time.
Yorkshire Marathon
Where? York
When? 19 October 2025
My personal fave. This fast and flat(ish) beauty takes you through the stunning streets of York and out into the countryside. Think PB potential meets postcard views, and it’s one of the best organised events I’ve ever done. Read my thoughts here.
Brighton Marathon
Where? Brighton
When? 12 April 2026
Seaside vibes and proper carnival energy, Brighton is a brilliant London alternative. The course is mostly flat (aside from a couple of cheeky hills early on) and the finish by the beach is dreamy. Expect crowds, costumes and a good time.
Boston Marathon (UK version!)
Where? Boston, Lincolnshire
When? 12 April 2026
Not to be confused with the American one, though this one is flat, fast and BQ-certified. Great for first-timers or time-chasers, plus you get countryside views and a relaxed vibe.
Manchester Marathon
Where? Manchester
When? 19 April 2026
Flat, friendly and fast, this one’s a big city vibe without the London chaos. Loads of crowd support, closed roads and the bonus of finishing right outside Old Trafford. Perfect if you’re chasing a PB or love a good atmosphere. Read my tips here.
Blackpool Marathon
Where? Blackpool
When? 26 April 2026
Flat and fast along the seafront, with views of the iconic tower and plenty of cheer points for spectators. Perfect excuse for a post-race chippy tea, too.
Belfast City Marathon
Where? Belfast
When? 3 May 2026
If you fancy making a weekend of it, Belfast is a brilliant shout. Historic landmarks, good support and a buzzing atmosphere make this a must-do race for your UK marathon bucket list.
Milton Keynes Marathon
Where? Milton Keynes
When? 4 May 2026
Tree-lined boulevards, lakes, parks and a stadium finish – this one’s surprisingly scenic. Bonus points for being an easy trip from London and having a fun festival vibe at the finish.
Edinburgh Marathon
Where? Edinburgh
When? 24 May 2026
Pancake flat and ridiculously scenic, this one sells out every year – and for good reason. You get a bit of city charm, a lot of coast, and it’s one of the best marathons in Scotland for first-timers and PB hunters alike.
There you go, proof that life (and marathon season) goes on after a London ballot rejection. Got your eye on one of these? Let me know which one’s calling your name and if you’re using a training plan, don’t forget you can get 2 weeks free with Runna using my code RWR2.
See you on the start line! 🏃♀️✨
