Inspired by watching the marathon – or did you take part and fancy another go?
There’s something about marathon season that makes you want to sign up again, isn’t there? Whether you’re riding the post-race high or just love the idea of a crisp autumn run, now’s the perfect time to plan your next challenge. Autumn races tend to be cooler and less crowded than the big spring ones. Plus, they make a great excuse for a little weekend getaway – especially if you’re eyeing up Ireland or Scotland! From scenic lochs to fast PB-friendly courses, here are some of the top autumn marathons across the UK and Ireland.

Whether you’re chasing a time or just love the marathon buzz, these are definitely worth a look:

LOCH NESS MARATHON 28 September 2025

This one’s all about the views. The point-to-point course runs along the stunning Loch Ness and finishes in Inverness. It’s a net downhill route (yes please!) but does include a few sneaky hills. Expect peaceful countryside and quiet stretches, especially in the middle miles. It’s just inside the Good For Age cut-off for London and also a qualifier for the Abbott WMM Age Group World Champs.

CHESTER MARATHON 5 October 2025

After a fast course? This one’s a great shout. Organisers say 70% of runners clock a PB here. It’s mostly flat, with a few short, sharp hills. You’ll start and finish in the lovely city of Chester and spend lots of time on quiet rural roads – including a few miles in Wales. It’s well-supported, really well-run, and another Abbott Age Group qualifier.

YORKSHIRE MARATHON 19 October 2025

This race offers a brilliant mix of city and countryside. It starts in York and heads out onto flat, scenic roads through the surrounding villages. It’s calm and peaceful in parts – ideal if you prefer fewer crowds and a more relaxed vibe. It’s also known for being super well organised and perfect for runners aiming for a solid time.

DUBLIN MARATHON 26 October 2025

Ireland’s biggest marathon and always held on the last Sunday in October. The course has some rolling hills (and a couple of tougher ones near the end), but the crowd support is incredible. Expect a buzzing atmosphere, a friendly vibe, and a brilliant place to celebrate your medal afterwards! The lottery has been drawn but there still looks to be charity spaces available.
