It doesn’t seem long since I reviewed the AfterShokz Aeropex a must-have accessory for my training runs. So, when AfterShokz kindly sent me their latest release, the Xtrainerz, I was excited to try them out. These waterproof bone conduction MP3 headphones are designed for swimmers, but how do they perform outside the pool?

What’s in the Box?

Included in the box are:

  • A pair of Xtrainerz
  • A carry case
  • A charger
  • Foam earbuds
  • A towel
  • A swim cap

First Impressions of the AfterShokz Xtrainerz

Appearance-wise, the Xtrainerz are very similar to the Aeropex. The first thing I noticed was the charging port. Unlike the other AfterShokz models that have a flap or magnetic connection, the charger clips around the headphones, ensuring a completely watertight seal. There’s a slight speckled pattern on the band and transducer (the speaker part), which helps me easily identify them from my Aeropex. Weighing in at only 30g, they feel super light!

Putting the Xtrainerz to the Test

The big difference with the Xtrainerz is that they are not Bluetooth enabled. You have to upload your MP3 files via USB first. While this is a bit time-consuming and means you don’t have the freedom to stream from apps like Spotify, the 4GB storage (around 1200 songs) is ample space for your favorite tunes, allowing you to work out phone-free.

They fit securely on your head like the other AfterShokz headphones, with the transducer sitting comfortably on your cheekbones. Walking into the pool area with them on felt a bit strange, especially since this is a council-run pool and I got a few funny looks (I wasn’t even wearing the swimming cap!).

Experience Underwater: Music That Moves

There’s always a worry that technology will break when it gets wet, but the Xtrainerz are IP68 waterproof, meaning they can be submerged for up to 2 hours in 2 meters of water! The deep end of my pool is 2.1 meters, so I felt secure knowing they could handle it.

At first, having headphones on underwater felt unusual, but they sounded incredible! The bass and volume seemed amplified, providing a clear listening experience. I was worried I might lose them in the deep end, but they stayed put throughout my swim. They were so light that I almost forgot I was wearing them. It wasn’t until I jumped in the shower post-swim that I realized I still had them on!

Versatility: Ideal for Triathletes and Runners

The AfterShokz Xtrainerz are versatile enough for both running and swimming, making them a great option for triathletes. However, since I primarily focus on running, the swimming aspect feels a bit secondary to me. If I had to choose, I might opt for the Aeropex model.

That said, the Xtrainerz will definitely come in handy during rainy runs. Once again, AfterShokz has managed to amaze me—maybe one day, I’ll take on a swimming challenge!

Final Verdict

If you’re looking for a reliable and comfortable audio solution for your training sessions, the AfterShokz Xtrainerz might be just what you need. With their waterproof design and solid sound quality, they can make your workouts more enjoyable.
