Yesterday’s Manchester Marathon really highlighted the power of community. Six months ago, I joined TGR York as a run lead - mainly as a way of meeting some new people. Life can feel a bit different when you’re in your 40s and all your friends are busy with kids/family-life!
•
The support and friendships I found here over the last few months has been incredible. Our Saturday runs and post-run coffee chats are one of the highlights of my week.
•
Whether you’re in a new city or away from home at university stepping out alone can be daunting, but trust me, TGR embraces everyone with open arms.
•
Running isn’t just about fitness; it’s a great way of meeting like-minded new people. So, if you’re curious or hesitant, drop me a DM and I hope to see you on a run with us soon!

⏰ 10 days to the #LondonMarathon
Here are my 10 race week tips:
•
Make sure you know where to collect your race number and opening times. I’d recommend getting this done as early as you can so you can relax.
•
Check the weather forecast so you’re prepared for the conditions. Plan an outfit for alternate weather in case it turns out to be worse (or better, let’s be hopeful) than expected.
•
Lay out your gear and ensure everything is clean and ready. Check you’ve got enough gels to get you through those 26.2 miles. If you are doing bag drop – pop something warm and some flip-flops in for after. Don’t forget safety pins for your number!
•
Plan your pre-race meal: Stick to foods that you know your body can handle and won’t cause any digestive issues.
•
Get a good night’s sleep: with excitement and nerves, this can be easier said than done. Prioritise early nights two or three nights before the race, so you are well rested for the weekend.
•
Trim those toenails a few days before race day – making sure not to go too short.
•
Stay well-hydrated by drinking plenty of water on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday to prepare for the race.
•
Make sure you know how you’ll be getting to the race start line and what time you need to be there. Make sure you know where you are parking or any public transport times. Have a backup plan just in case.
•
Ensure your watch / headphones are fully charged. That’s one less thing to stress about on marathon morning.
•
The day before a marathon is not the time to cram in any last-minute training. Save that energy for race day. Use this time to relax, and mentally prepare yourself for the race.
•

Running was never a huge part of my life, like a lot of girls I dreaded seeing PE on the school timetable. Did anyone actually like wearing those awful knicker shorts?

Dance classes became my thing. Dancing didn’t feel like Hockey or Netball did - it was more fun and expressive! What’s not to love about prancing around in cool outfits and seeing who could do the highest kick or the best splits?
•
AD - Worringly, a new global study from @asics has found that teenagers are dropping out of exercise earlier and in larger numbers. This is having a detrimental impact on their mental wellbeing now and in the future. Whilst it is difficult to encourage kids to be active the ASICS State of Mind Study identifies a strong link between exercise in teenage years and a positive mental wellbeing in adulthood.
