As the winter months usher in early sunsets, my winter running ventures into the night. Whether in well-lit areas or not, visibility is crucial, and safety is a priority. Discover why the FlipBelt LED Running Light has become my go-to gear choice for nighttime runs.

Key Considerations When Buying a Running Light:

  1. Number of Lumens: Brightness matters—higher lumens mean a brighter torch.
  2. Burn Time: Find out how long the torch lasts on a single charge.
  3. Approx Distance: Learn about the torch’s light projection distance.

I was kindly sent the new FlipBelt LED Running Light to try out. I’ve been putting it through its paces for the last few months. Here’s what I thought.

Out of the box

Unlike traditional head torches, the FlipBelt LED Running Light is designed to be worn around your waist, conveniently fitting inside your FlipBelt. Emitting an impressive 500 lumens at its brightest setting, it outshines many market alternatives. With four versatile modes (high, medium, low, and strobe), it adapts to different scenarios.

Weighing 177 grams, it feels slightly heavier than a standard head torch, but its waist-worn design ensures the weight goes unnoticed. Additionally, its lower light projection angle enhances the visibility of ground objects. The IPX6 waterproof rating makes it rain-ready.

Getting started

To use the FlipBelt LED Running Light, simply unscrew the end to reveal the micro USB charging port. Charging takes about two hours, providing an impressive 8 to 12 hours of burn time—perfect for multiple evening runs. Insert it into your FlipBelt, keeping it in its rubbery casing, and press the green button to power it on. It’s a straightforward setup, getting you ready for your run in no time.

On the run

During a 28-mile endurance run, I put this torch to the ultimate test, pairing it with my reflective FlipBelt. It stayed securely in place throughout the race, offering a wide-angle beam for excellent visibility. The 180-degree tilt adjustment allows precise light direction without dazzling running companions.

Scores on the doors

In conclusion, the FlipBelt LED Running Light has left a lasting impression. Its brightness, compact design, and user-friendliness make it a standout choice. The added benefit of recharge ability is a significant plus. The only minor improvement I’d suggest is a feature to power off by pressing and holding, rather than cycling through various light modes.
